SAFETY GLASS
TEMPERED GLASS
Heat resistant to 400-500 degrees. When fully tempered the glass fractures into small, relatively harmless fragments. This reduces the likelihood of injury to people as there are no jagged edges or sharp shards. Also used for shelving, tabletops, doors, auto door glass, etc…
Available in 1/8″, 3/16″, 1/4″, 3/8″,1/2″, & 3/4″ clear.
LAMINATED GLASS
Laminated glass, often called “safety glass”, consists of two pieces of glass bonded together with a plastic interlayer, or polyvinyl butyral. If the glass breaks, the interlayer will allow the glass to remain. Available in 1/8″ (clear only) & 1/4″. Laminated glass products provide resistance to penetration due to the PVB interlayer that can only be penetrated or broken by a weapon, sharp object, or intense heat, while normal glass can be easily broken with the impact of a rock. When broken by impact, laminated glass tends to remain integral in its frame, minimizing the risk of injury from sharp edges and flying or falling glass, and strongly resists penetration by the impacting object or person.
Laminated Safety Glass consists of two or more pieces of glass and one or more interlayers of PVB permanently bonded together under heat and pressure. Annealed, tempered, heat strengthened, chemically strengthened, wired, tinted, and one-way or transparent mirrors can be incorporated into the laminated unit. For improved thermal and acoustical performance, laminated glass can be combined into insulating glass units.
Typical applications include: Entrance doors, sliding doors, shower and bath doors and enclosures, railings, elevators, exterior curtain walls, office partitions, schools, sports stadiums, airports, hotels, and factories.
WIRE GLASS & FIRE RATED WIRE GLASS
Wire Glass is generally used for safety or security. Fire Rated glass can withstand temperatures that may exceed 1600° F.
Available in 1/8″, 3/16″, 1/4″, 3/8″,1/2″, & 3/4″ – Clear.
Wire glass – 1/4″ only.
Fire Rated & Wire Glass creates a barrier to smoke & flames that ordinary glass can’t.
When heated beyond 250°F normal glass will break and allow easy access for smoke and fire to spread. By way of contrast, fire-rated glass has been tested in conditions where the temperature may exceed 1,600°F. Fire-rated glass that has passed that kind of testing will remain intact and restrict the expansion of the fire. In some locations, glass often is more desirable than a solid material for enhancing lighting, security or aesthetics. Typically, fire-rated glass is used instead of ordinary window glass in corridors, lobbies, stairwells and other areas of a building that could serve as an escape route during a fire. People often recognize by the familiar criss-cross wire pattern in the glass. The wire is embedded in the glass to hold it in place during a fire. But the wire does not make the glass stronger. In fact, wired glass is weaker than ordinary tempered or laminated glass. For many years, wired glass was the only glazing material that could endure the testing and earn a fire rating. Now a number of new glass options have emerged that outperform wired glass in both fire and impact safety. These products do not have wire mesh and help businesses & schools move away from the “institutional” look and feel of wired glass.
Other Fire-Rated Options Available: Some of the new product options aren’t a glass at all – they are a transparent ceramic. Today, ceramic products can be found in stovetops, wood & gas fireplaces, and industrial applications. When it is installed, ceramic looks like ordinary window glass, yet it retains its heat-resistant qualities. Available in insulated units for exterior applications, ceramic also can be beveled, etched or sandblasted without affecting the fire rating. Standard glass cannot simultaneously handle the stress of two temperature extremes – heat from a fire plus cold water from a fire hose or an activated sprinkler. Fire-rated ceramics, however, have passed what is called the “fire hose stream test” and are unaffected by this type of thermal shock. In some cases, a design may call for glass that can block heat in addition to flames and smoke. Historically, this has meant using solid barrier walls and only a small amount of glass for visibility as needed. Advancements in fire-rated glass have made it possible to have unrestricted amounts of glass in with two-hour fire rating requirements. These newer glass products are called transparent wall units because they are tested to the same standards as walls, and they act as a barrier to the transfer of heat. Tests have shown that even with a hot fire on one side of the glass, the opposite surface of the glass is still cool enough to touch. Developments in fire-rated glass have created the opportunity for architects to enhance their designs without sacrificing safety. Passive fire-rated glass used in conjunction with active systems such as sprinklers and alarms, can provide the best possible defense against fire.

PYROCERAM
Pyroceram is a transparent ceramic also known as Neoceram or Robax. Pyroceram has a high thermal shock rating of 1380 degrees and is normally used in high heat applications such as wood stoves or inserts. Breakage usually occurs as a result of impact or retaining hardware tightened too tight.
PYREX
Pyrex is a great replacement for tempered glass, it will withstand the same amount of heat but does not need to be special ordered. So if you need it right away we can cut it in shop. And Pyrex will withstand up to about 500 degrees. It is used in gas lamps and high heat lights.
INSULATED GLASS
Wooster Glass can help you save on your energy bills! Insulated glass keeps heat from leaking out in the winter time and leaking in during the summer. But this requires good, functional coatings and seals. Bad coatings and the outside environment both contribute to the slow deterioration of the seals on your insulated glass sometimes resulting in leakage or condensation. Our skilled staff can repair this damage in shop or at your home. We also offer replacement units with muntins, low e, argon and tempered glass.
